Where to keep PDFs on iPhone so you can find them

Updated 13 October 2026. 2 minute read.

A PDF on iPhone can be in Mail, in a browser tab, in Downloads, in Books, or in a chat. The file is rarely lost. You just cannot remember which of the five places it went to. Decide on one home and send everything there.

Getting the PDF out of where it arrived

From Safari: open the PDF, tap Share, then Save to Files, or choose the app you keep documents in.

From Mail: tap the attachment to open it, tap Share, and send it on the same way. Leaving a document in your inbox means searching mail for it later, by sender, by guesswork.

From Messages or another chat: tap the file, then Share.

From paper: scan it. The built-in scanner produces a proper multi-page PDF.

Home number one: Files

The Files app is the classic answer. Create a few folders in iCloud Drive and stay consistent:

Files works well if you file things when they arrive. It works badly if you do not, because a Downloads folder with three hundred files called document(4).pdf is as good as a shredder.

Home number two: a library that reads

The alternative is to stop filing and rely on search. This is how Stashy treats a PDF:

  1. Tap Share and choose Stashy, or tap the plus button in the app and choose Files.
  2. Stashy reads the document once, on your device.
  3. It gets a short summary, a category and hidden keywords.

After that, the invoice from the dentist turns up when you search "dentist", "invoice" or the month, whatever the file happens to be called. Nothing is uploaded to do this.
