How to organize screenshots on iPhone
Updated 13 October 2026. 2 minute read.
A screenshot is the quickest way to keep something on an iPhone, which is why there are two thousand of them in your photo library. Tickets, addresses, a message you wanted to remember, a product you might buy. They are mixed in with your holiday pictures and you scroll past them every day.
Sorting this out takes three steps: see them all, delete most, and move the rest somewhere they can be found.
Step 1: See them all in one place
Open Photos and look for Screenshots under Media Types. It lists every screenshot on the device, oldest to newest. This is the only view you need for the clean-up.
Step 2: Delete in bulk
Most screenshots were only ever needed for an hour. A boarding pass from last year, a parking spot, a meme you already sent.
- In the Screenshots album, tap Select.
- Drag your finger across a row and then downwards to select many at once.
- Tap the bin.
Do the oldest ones first. Anything older than a few months that you have not missed is safe to let go. Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for a while, so a mistake is recoverable.
Step 3: Find by text
Before you file anything by hand, know that Photos can read. Search in Photos for a word that appears in a screenshot, such as a street name or an order number, and it will often find the picture. That alone rescues many of the "I know I screenshotted it" moments.
Step 4: Give the keepers a home
Some screenshots are not photos at all. They are information: a confirmation, a recipe, the settings that finally made the router work. Those belong with your other saved things, not in the camera roll.
To move one into Stashy:
- Open the screenshot in Photos.
- Tap Share and choose Stashy.
- Delete the original from Photos.
In the library the text in the picture is recognised on your device, so it gets a summary and can be found by what it says. It also files itself into one of your categories, next to the links and notes on the same subject.
A better habit for next time
Ask one question before you press the buttons: is there a link? If the thing you want to keep is a web page, save the page. A link stays readable, opens the original, and can be summarized. A screenshot of an article is a picture of the first third of it.
Keep screenshots for what has no address: a chat message, a setting, an error on screen.
Keep it from growing back
- Clear the Screenshots album on the first of the month. It takes two minutes when it is thirty items and an evening when it is two thousand.
- Move keepers out the same day. See saving from the Share Sheet to make that two taps.
- Trust search. You do not need albums for screenshots if the important ones live in a place that can read them.
